Giraffe Center in Nairobi

Two Digital Gypsies Rating – 2.5 Stars

Located approximately 5km southwest of the city center in Nairobi, the The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (Kenya) Ltd. is more commonly know as the Giraffe Center. It was founded in 1979 by Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville. The goal of the Giraffe Center is a breeding and conservation program to rescue the endangered Rothschild giraffe.

At the Giraffe Center there is a platform where visitors can feed the giraffes. Inside the platform is an auditorium where there are lectures on conservation and giraffes, and art exhibits done by local school children. Local school children get free admission to the center and the hope is that they will continue the tradition of caring and conservation for Kenyan wildlife.

It’s a lot of fun to get this up close and personal to a real giraffe, and even more fun to actually feed a giraffe. My wife Barbara put some giraffe friendly food in her lips and when the giraffe took the food she got a giraffe kiss!

The center also features a nature sanctuary where you can take a nature walk, a tea room for drinks and snacks, and a gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs. The Giraffe Center is a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi.
